Wine & Puds
after the Christmas Concert
Wine and Pudds in early December
was very well attended and enjoyable. The Big Band provided musical entertainment
while the mulled wine quickly ran out and the pudding tables went from
being piled high to empty and peoples' stomachs groaned instead!
Yuletide
Fayre
The Yuletide Fayre in November is now a popular venue on the local craft show scene and we are in great demand from retailers who wish to sell their wares in such a beautiful and desirable location.
Last year requests to attend from new retailers meant we did not have to sell ourselves at all to fill the available spaces and the customers appreciated the varied and high quality products on offer.
Wednesday 5th November
Remember, remember the 5th of November - gunpowder, treason and plot!

On a balmy Sunday in June we saw parents, friends and members
of the Prior Park Association gather to enjoy a picnic and sporting
afternoon.
Spectators could choose from the very competitive cricket match between old boys and present students or the more jovial but equally competitive tennis tournament of past and present parents, children and friends. Our thanks go to Giles Pruett who organized the tennis tournament roster. This was the first joint venture between the PPA and the SPF and was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended. The SPF provided a match tea of cakes, scones, tea and soft drinks which was very welcome after all the exertions! This was such a success we hope to repeat the joint event next year and look forward to parents signing up for the tournament in their droves. |

Early
March saw another nail-biting Quiz Evening in the Mansion. Nearly 100
parents, friends and staff came to test their mettle against our quiz-master,
Simon Edwards. Simon had not been very impressed by a request to make
the questions easier than the previous year, but he complied (and no doubt
thought quietly what thickos we were for needing easier questions!). The
final scores showed that it still wasn't too easy for most people.
"The Idles of March" came first with Easter eggs and wine for
prizes, "Pressganged "picked up the wooden spoons and a special
prize went to the team with the best name "Norfolk and Chance".
Have a few drinks and you'll see why it appealed!.
Liz Dawson and her team provided a very tasty fish and chip supper at
the halfway point for which we are very grateful. Andrew Whitaker and
Lara Price ran the bar brilliantly.
The evening was a social rather than fundraising one but we still managed
to make a tidy profit to go into SPF funds.
Burns Night
Burns
Night used to be a regular date on the Prior Park calendar and after a
break of a couple of years (while the Bursar who masterminds it recovered
from the excesses of the evening) it returned with even more enthusiasm
and energy (if not improved dancing technique!)
It
was an evening complete with piper, Ode to the Haggis and platefuls of
haggis, neeps and tatties to sustain the revellers through 2 hours of
Scottish country dancing.
The
Mansion Hall hummed to the sound of a father and son team of fiddlers
playing while the parents and friends assembled. Tom and Alexander Shaw
were then followed by another parent, Martyn Davies piping in the haggis.
Robert Burns' Ode to the Haggis was then read by a resident Scot.
After
the haggis supper (washed down with copious amounts of wine) the Bursar
valiantly spent the next two hours trying to marshall over 100 adults
into dances such as the Dashing White Sergeant, the Gay Gordons and one
that proved too much for the majority to follow, the Eightsome Reel.
Charles
Freeman, the Bursar and organiser of the evening had said earlier when
asked about the children's dancing classes, "This sort of country
dancing requires the girls to show grace and deportment. The boys need
that too, but in their case they also need about as much energy and stamina
as they require for a rugby scrum. You have to be fit for this."
He might have been talking about the adult version.
