PRIOR PARK CARNIVAL 2003

The normally quiet lawns in front of the Mansion at Prior Park College erupted on Saturday afternoon into 4 hours of fun and noise. The late afternoon sun shone on hundreds of pupils, parents and visitors who enjoyed a plethora of activities, games and competitions, sustained by a constant supply of food and drink. The slopes leading down to the National Trust Landscape Garden resounded to the music of Samba Sulis, Thornbury School Steel Band and the College's own Big Band and Concert Band as well as Morris men and strolling minstrels plucked from the student body. Highlights included a static balloon lift, which could barely cope with the number of people wanting to float up into the sky for a few minutes, and the glorious sight of the balloon finally being released from its tether and heading towards Bath. England Rugby coach, Andy Robinson, had the crowd on tenterhooks as he auctioned a shirt signed by the current squad, with it finally going for just over £1000. A display of classic cars interested the older members of the crowd while children of all ages were kept amused by giant games, juggling lessons and a variety of stalls where prizes could be won. The lake in the National Trust Garden stood out and twinkled as darkness fell lit by torches all around it and a short firework display finished the evening off. This was the first Carnival organised by the Society of Parents and Friends of Prior Park College and judging by its success will be the first of many.
